NEW DELHI: Continuing with the tradition of leading the counter-militancy battle in Jammu and Kashmir and north-east from the front, four young Army officers and a soldier have been awarded the Kirti Chakra in the Republic Day honours' list this year.
While this year there is no recipient of Ashok Chakra -- the nation's highest peacetime gallantry award -- the President will confer it posthumously on Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, the medical doctor who was among the Indian nationals killed in a terrorist attack in Kabul in February 2010. His name was announced for Ashok Chakra on August 15 last year.
Among the five Kirti Chakra awardees is Captain Deepak Sharma (Corps of Signals), who laid down his life while battling heavily-armed militants in Pulwama district, J&K.
The others are Major Rahul Gurung (Corps of Engineers), Lieutenants Vikas Sharma (6 Para) and Vikrant Ajit Deshmukh (8 Madras) and Naik Rajinder Singh (2 Rajputana Rifles).
Among the 21 awardees of Shaurya Chakra -- the third highest gallantry award -- are five who have got it posthumously. They are Colonel Neeraj Sood (Rajputana Rifles), Havildar Dayal Singh (8 Garhwal Rifles), Lance-Naik Anoop Kumar Sharma (Artillery), Sepoy Sangat Singh (Mahar) and Sepoy Shailesh Kumar Singh (Bihar Regiment).
The 16 others are Major Sanjeev Haryal (Artillery), Major Rakesh Rawat (J&K Rifles), Major Manish Baral (Mahar Regiment), Captain Manendra Pratap Singh (ASC), Lt Vikram Bahadur Singh (ASC), Naik Vijap Pal (16 Jat), Lance-Naik Mohammed Shaffi (Territorial Army), Lance-Naik Praveen Thakur (J&K Rifles), Lance-Naik K S Kharwung (Naga Regiment), Sepoy Channalli Basavaraj (19 Madras), Sepoy Ravinder Singh (16 Jat), Sepoy Vijay Singh Bohara (Naga Regiment), rifleman Udhay Singh (Rajputna Rifles), rifleman Milap Singh (31 Assam Rifles), paratrooper Kapil Dev (1 Para) and Flight Lieutenant Manish Arora (IAF).
Incidentally, the pilot of a Seaking naval helicopter, Commander Naveen T! hapa, an d its aircrewman diver Bijender have been awarded the Nao Sena Medal for rescuing three personnel of submarine INS Shankush who had been washed overboard by a freak wave around 100 km off Mumbai in August last year.
