BILASPUR: Expressing shock at Chhattisgarh government's decision to quietly scrap an elephant reserve, environment minister Jairam Ramesh wrote to chief minister Raman Singh, requesting him to review the decision. Jairam reminded the CM that his government itself had asked for two elephant reserves in the state.
"Ironically, permission was given by MoEF in 2007 for notifying these two elephant reserves based on your request..You also requested Chhattisgarh be included in the Project Elephant which has been done. I understand the state government has been repeatedly assuring MoEF that the notification is under process but this has not happened," the letter said.
On January 16, TOI reported how Chhattisgarh government sacrificed conservation for the lure of coal.
Jairam Ramesh said since the area was already notified as either reserve or protected forests, clearances would still be required under forest and wildlife protection acts.
