Deoband: The Head of Darul Uloom, Deoband offered to resign on Tuesday after reports of infighting and student violence on Campus.
The newly elected chief has been under fire for his statement where he allegedly praised developmental work in Narender Modi's Gujrat.
The ultra-conservative lobby in India's oldest seminary proved too much to handle for the MBA Maulana who has decided to step down as Darul Ulooom Chief. Ghulam Vastanvi has been facing flak for alleged pro-Narendra Modi remarks praising his developmental work in the state.
"Newspapers have carried out a propaganda against me. The campus is peaceful. Interested parties are creating trouble," said Vastanvi.
On Sunday a group of students allegedly tried to shut down the campus demanding Vastanvi's resignation and were suspended by the management. The students allege they are being tortured by Vastanvi's supporters.
"The VC and Hostel Incharge attacked me. They tried to strangle me. These students came to my rescue," said Qasim, a student.
Vastanvi has called a meeting of the Governing Co! uncil in 15 days when he will formally resign. There are several people who feel he's a victim of internal politics.
"All this is being organised by Arshad Madani who wanted to use the name of Darul Uloom to achieve his narrow political ambitions," said Badar Kasmi of Muslim Majlis - Uttar Pradesh.
