EC team in Bengal for survey, Karat wonders why

KOLKATA: The Election Commission's team to assess law and order situation in West Bengal reached Kolkata on Sunday evening. Led by Bihar chief electoral officer Sudhir Kumar Rakesh, the team comprises five IPS officers. The team will send a report on its findings to the Chief Election Commissioner later this week.

The unprecedented move by the Election Commission has raised hackles among the CPM. Party general secretary Prakash Karat, in Kolkata for the two-day politburo meeting, flagged his fears over the move.

Calling it "unprecedented", Karat said police officers from outside are not being sent to any other state before elections. "We will try to find out why it is so. We don't think police officers from outside can contribute to the capacity of the state government to ensure free and fair polls," said Karat. He added, "I feel Bihar elections have turned out to be a model for the EC. It is trying to run all the elections in that manner." Karat parried questions when asked if his party will write to the Election Commission about it. "We will try to find out why police officers are being sent from outside," he said.

"If there are illegal arms, the government should take steps and seize them. Our party wants an end to all forms of political violence in the state," Karat said.
