Naval warship on fire, 300 tonnes of fuel on board

Mumbai: After nearly eight hours, a major fire on board a naval warship has been put out off the Mumbai harbour.

The fire began at 4.30 am on the INS Vindhyagiri. The same ship had been hit last evening by a merchant vessel, the MV Nordlake.

The INS Vindhyagiri is now tilting at more than 50 percent, and it has 300 tons of fuel on board. Everyone on board has been evacuated.

Mumbai's fire brigade teamed up with the port trust and ONGC to fight the fire.

The Navy has complained that the merchant ship that hit it did not follow standard operating procedure. The Vindhyagiri was entering the harbour last evening at 5 pm and the Nordlake was on its way out when it hit the warship near the Sunk Rock Lighthouse.

The MV Nordlake reportedly tried to move out of the way of another ship, the Sea Eagle, and in the process, rammed into the Vindhyagiri.
