PANCHKULA: One may imagine that hardcore criminal Sunil alias Kala, a prisoner at the high-security Ambala jail, would know better than fooling around with law. But apparently he hasn't learnt a lesson yet.
Facing a number of criminal charges, including involvement in the PC Jewellers heist case, Kala took a fancy to having a radio in his barrack for some entertainment. When he couldn't get a permission from the court, Kala went ahead and forged the signature of a sessions judge on an application, allowing himself to own the radio. The jail authorities, however, saw through the deception and on Tuesday an official of Ambala jail reached Panchkula court with a copy of the fake orders. Suspecting foul play, when hardcore criminal Kala gave them a copy of court orders allowing him to keep a radio inside the jail, they took up the matter with court and found them to be fake.
The judge directed jail officials to inquire into the matter and take action against Kala according to jail rules and provisions. Sources said Sunil had moved an application before Panchkula's sessions court in the first week of January and requested for permission to listen to a radio. His application, written in English, explained his need for recreation since he has been languishing in Ambala jail for more than one-and-a-half years. But the judge did not accept his application and Kala withdrew it. Not one to be turned down so easily, Kala found a way out.
Sources said he managed to forge the judge's signature on the application and even managed to get a fake stamp on it. On January 7, Kala submitted the "approved" application before the jail authorities and asked for a radio. The officials, however, smelt a rat and checked various high court orders on the issue of facilities available to hardcore criminals in prison. They reached the court of additional district and sessions judge Ritu Garg on Tuesday to inquire about the orders. But the judge, who is also special judge of National Investigati! on Agenc y, was shocked to see her fake signatures and stamp.
